Wireless HDMI Extender

Gefen on Wednesday announced its Wireless HDMI Extender, a device that provides users with cable-free HD extension for up to 30 feet within a line-of-sight. The Wireless HDMI Extender is designed for ceiling mounted displays, outside applications, and rooms where users want to avoid putting in extension cables. The add-on provides users with two HDMI inputs and one component HD video input that can be shared using UWB wireless that allows up to three HD signals to be sent to one location, including with 5.1 Dolby surround.

Resolutions supported by the device range from basic 480i through to 1080p. The Extender is also platform-agnostic and will accept input from Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and set-top boxes. In addition, the Wireless HDMI Extender is also HDMI 1.3 compatible and Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) compliant for TVs and peripherals that can control other devices attached over HDMI. The Wireless HDMI Extender is available for order from the Gefen website and priced at $1,000.

    Explain to me,

At $1k, how does this save money over buying the 30'-60' cable instead?

    No serial port?

It costs a grand yet there's no serial port. It might be OK for a home installation (but pricey), but without the serial port, and the bidirectional communication it brings, professional installers are gonna hate it.
