Inspiron Mini 10 Orders Up

As promised, Dell today started taking orders for the Inspiron Mini 10. The finished product has just one stock configuration at $399 and ships by default with a 1.33GHz Atom, 1GB of memory, a 160GB hard drive, a 1.3-megapixel webcam and a 16:9 ratio 1024x576 display. Dell's earlier warnings about initial upgrades have proven true and won't let users upgrade either the memory or hard drive.

The initial model lets users upgrade the processor to a 1.6GHz Atom for $50, add a USB-attached DVD burner for $80, and change the lid color from black to one of five others for $30. Cellular networking is currently limited to an Ovation USB 3G modem for Sprint that costs $280. A 1366x768 screen, Bluetooth, GPS and internal 3G all remain slated for the future.

Despite taking orders today, Dell doesn't ship the early orders for the mid-size netbook until early April, or roughly three months after the system was first teased at CES.
