Safari 4 first look: something borrowed

Safari 4 Beta First Look

Apple's release of a public beta for Safari 4 is the company's first truly major attempt to compete in the web browser space since, arguably, Safari 2. But while it incorporates several new features that are absolutely crucial to its acceptance as a mainstream app, a number of its most important features are actually drawn from some of its closest competitors, especially Google's Chrome. We examine why this is a good thing, as well as some of the more original features, in a special first look at what might be Apple's most important release yet.

    I don't care much

about how it looks. It works great on my older DP FW800 G4. Very fast. Loads photo heavy pages in a flash. Beta or not, it's seems very stable in the dozens of sites I've tried so far. It's going on all my computers right now.

    whirly-gig?

So they replaced the actual page load progress indicator with a whirlygig? How is that better? On Apple's 'Safari 150 Features' page, it says "At a glance, you can see exactly when a site is finished loading"... actually I find it much less obvious than the blue progress-bar-within-the-address-bar UI

    Luv it!

Works great 17" PBPro OS X 10.5.6. Windows Vista works well too!

I do however miss the tab bar positioned below the bookmarks bar. I wish this was made an option or at least made the tab bar draggable & lockable.

    Not so good experience

While Safari 4 worked well, I started to get kernel issues with address book and DVD player -- not so good. Reverting to Safari 3 was simple though, and resolved the issues. Feedback sent to Apple. Ah well, beta is beta. Looking forward to the next release.

    the worst from Chrome

I have to say Apple screwed up, as far as I'm concerned, in borrowing the most annoying feature in Chrome, the tabs above the address bar.

    YUCK!!!

    Tabs

I actually like the tabs above the address bar. The speed is much faster on my Mac Mini compared to version 3.
