Boston area set to gain new Apple Store

updated 03:05 pm EST, Tue February 24, 2009

Dedham, Mass. Apple Store

The area surrounding Boston, Massachusetts will soon gain another Apple Store, reports indicate. The new outlet is set to open in the town of Dedham, just southwest of Boston. It should be located within the Legacy Place mall, which is being built alongside Interstate 95 but will generally target richer customers with attractions such as L.L. Bean and Whole Foods, as well as office space and a movie theater.

The mall is expected to contain 675,000 square feet of usable space, though it remains unknown where the Apple Store will be situated. The store is likely to open with the rest of Legacy Place in the fall however, and when completed will be unusually close to other Boston Apple Stores -- just five miles away from the Chestnut Hill outlet, and 12 miles from the South Shore storefront. Apple has promised that it will launch only 25 new Apple Stores worldwide in 2009.

    Figures

Now there are 8 stores in the immediate Boston area? That seems a lot risky given the economy. Once layoffs start popping around that area, I'd wager that several of these stores will be shuttered.

    Boston Topology

On paper, the proximity of these stores sounds close, but if you lived in and around Boston you would know that those locations are, for whatever reason, geographically distinct and they would not siphon away potential customers from one another, especially switchers and/or casual shoppers. I, for one, applaud Apple if this is true as traveling to and from the South Shore, Chestnut Hill or Cambridge locations were a major pain for me and I suspect, many suburban MacHeads.

    More Topology

I am in Burlington with an Apple Store and an LL Beans that just moved in. The only other LL Bean in Mass is in Mansfield, which is like 4-5 towns away from Dedham, unless they are also putting up stores left and right. That would make 3 in Mass alone.

Agreed galenea on traveling. 11 miles from Burlington to Cambridge/Boston with 3 stores in between the towns. That 11 miles can take anywhere from 10 to 90 minutes depending on the wonderful driving skills of the locals.
