Kodak possibly infringing on LG camera patent?

updated 04:15 pm EST, Mon February 23, 2009

Kodak sued by LG

LG Electronics on Friday has requested that a trade panel investigates a possible digital cell phone camera patent infringement by Eastman Kodak, says a Monday report. The International Trade Commission made the announcement and will investigate the accusation. If it deems a patent has indeed been infringed upon, it has the power to order the offending company to stop importing the infringing devices into the United States. Last week, Samsung filed a similar complaint against Kodak.

The move follows similar Kodak efforts, where the American firm sued both LG and Samsung back in November for allegedly copying Kodak techniques for capturing, compressing, previewing and storing photos as well as still images.

    Kodak Response

Hi, Dave Lanzillo here from Kodak. I wanted to provide some additional perspective on this issue.

Kodak invented the digital camera more than 30 years ago at its research labs in Rochester, N.Y. Today, the technology that Kodak relies upon to create its portfolio of digital cameras is owned or properly licensed by Kodak. Recognizing the value of Kodak's leading innovation in digital photography, many global companies have licensed our digital camera technology for use in their products. When Samsung and LG refused to do so, Kodak sued in the ITC and Federal District Court on November 17, 2008. We believe that Samsung's and LGs latest filings are retaliatory tactics and we intend to vigorously contest their claims.
