Broadcom to build Chumby into online devices

Broadcom integrates Chumby

Broadcom announced on Monday that the Chumby platform will be made available for the company's Internet connected devices that include digital TVs, set-top boxes and chips uses in Blu-ray players. The cooperation between the companies will allow users to tune to Internet radio stations and podcasts as well as access other personalized Internet content. Via widgets, users can access social networks, including Chumby's own, in addition to streaming video or audio content offered by its media partners.

The Linux-based and therefore open-source Chumby platform that accesses a user's saved settings and preferences saved on Internet. The fact that it's cloud-based allows users to access their accounts from any compatible station, with graphics that scale to accommodate any display.

The original Chumby device let users access web-based messaging applications, listen to Interent radio or use it as a webcam. Chumby's partners that provide content for enabled devices include Pandora, The New York Times, SHOUTcast, CBS, The Weather Channel and MTV.
