Nikon readying entry-level D5000 DSLR?

updated 08:35 am EST, Fri February 20, 2009

Nikon D5000 Rumor

Nikon may be readying a new entry-level digital SLR that either complements or replaces the D60. A source that was originally investingating Olympus information now claims that a camera known as the D5000 may be unveiled at the PMA photography expo next month and that its imaging performance will roughly be on par with the considerably higher-end D90. Among the improvements would be a long-requested increase on the number of autofocusing points from just three on the D40 and D60.

The camera would continue to trim costs by requiring that the lenses have their own autofocus motors instead of building it into the camera body, as is the case with the D90 and up.

When the camera would ship and more concrete technical details aren't mentioned, and potentially cast doubt on the accuracy of the report. Nikon has recently entered a pattern of releasing an entry-level DSLR every 1 to 1.5 years, however, and hasn't addressed the category since unveiling the D60 in January of last year. A D5000 name would also avoid a potential naming conflict with the older D70. [via Nikon Rumors]
