AT&T resumes $100 iPhone refurb discount

updated 11:40 am EST, Wed February 18, 2009

iPhone refurb discount

AT&T has resumed an earlier discount made possible for the iPhone 3G. The carrier is once again selling refurbished iPhones with a $100 price cut, bringing the cost of the 8GB model down to $99, and the 16GB version to $199. A fresh two-year contract is also required, and AT&T warns that some phones could be marred by "minor scratches."

The reason for new offer is unclear, as several motives may be present. AT&T may for instance be hoping to boost sales in the face of a shrinking economy and lower wages; the carrier may alternately have received a sudden influx of used phones, or be looking to help Apple clear out inventory in advance of a new iPhone in the summer. A simpler explanation may be that AT&T intends to sell refurbished models on a periodic basis.

    Now they're right

Now the analcysts are right. Apple is now selling a $99 iPhone.

    Alas...

This isn't available for existing AT&T customers. I tried to call in before to get this price to upgrade, with a contract extension, and they said it was new contracts only.

    Worked For Me

I'm an AT&T customer with upgrade eligibility and I just got the $99 price by going on line and upgrading from inside my account. It hasn't arrived yet, but I see no reason why it won't. So in my experience, it's not just for new subscribers.

    Nope

I'm currently with AT&T and have the original iPhone. They wouldn't let me use this deal last time.

    Yep

I took advantage of the last $100 refurb deal that ended 12/31 - I owned the original iPhone and was an existing ATT customer.

BTW - the refurb was flawless.

    time period

If your current contract is of a certain age (like less than a year, at least), you can't upgrade your phone, whether it be an iPhone or a Razr or whatever. They make money off the contract. Just going "Hey, give me the new iPhone and I'll start a new 2-year deal!" doesn't pay for your last phone.

    Might as well wait

the new iphone when it comes out later this year will still be priced at $299 and will likely have more space, and better hardware. Apple has settled on their price points. And in this economy I can even see them coming down a bit. Even mighty Apple is being bit by the ::cough:: minor recession.

    Would you buy?

Two things might keep me back from doing this...

    1. Newer phones due out; I'll bite if I can upgrade to a 32GB phone.

    2. I have reservations about buying a refurbished phone. Any idea what's "refurbished"?
