Samsung adds SL digicams

Samsung on Tuesday announced it will triple the available models in its SL-Series of digital cameras with two 12.2-megapixel and two 10-megapixel cameras. The new SL820 and SL620 share the same 12.2-megapixel sensor, 3-inch LCD screen and 5x optical zoom. Where they differ is with the former's ability to shoot HD videos, recording them in H.264 format at 720p resolution and 30fps compared to the latter's MPEG4 VGA video recording at the same frame rate. The SL820 also has an HDMI output, a 28mm wide angle lens and both hardware as well as software image stabilization.

Otherwise, the cameras have the same face detection, smile shot, blink detection, red-eye fix and other photo help functions, and Samsung's Smart Album feature which lets users search for specific images saved on their memory cards.

The 10-megapixel SL202 and SL30 cameras are aimed at more mainstream uses, with a 3x optical zoom and VGA-resolution video capture at 30fps. The SL202 comes with a 2.7-inch LCD, while the SL30 has a 2.5-inch display. The former has the same Smart Album category and search feature as the bigger SL820 and SL620, and shares the Frame Guide function remembers the template for a taken photograph and displays it as a guide to shoot it again with different subjects. Both have digital image stabilization software but only the SL202 is able to detect smiles, faces and blinks; the SL30 can only detect faces.

The SL820 will ship in May at a $280 price, while the SL620 is coming in March, priced at $200. The SL202 and SL30 also both ship in March, with prices fixed at about $150 and $100, respectively.
