ASUS Eee PC 1000HG

Countering its rival LG's own introduction at Mobile World Congress, ASUS has taken its turn at revealing a new Eee PC with wide-area wireless. The 1000HG will have a built-in WiMAX modem that lets it connect to 4G services in the US and elsewhere while still preserving 802.11n Wi-Fi for short-range networking. As suggested by the name, the netbook will also have a 10-inch display and share a similar design with most other Eee PC 1000 models.

The company isn't specific on other components and notes that the 1000HG is still in development, with the final system layout and its ultimate ship date liable to change.

Supplementing the 1000HG, ASUS has also exploited the cellular technology show to demonstrate two existing Eee PCs running Windows 7 with a 3G, HSPA Internet connection. The 1003HA is built to be offered through carriers as a subsidized PC and comes with both the 3G connection as well as a 10-inch display and a 160GB hard drive; the T91 convertible tablet takes advantage of Microsoft's upcoming operating system both for the 3G but also for a touchscreen interface that complements its own.

ASUS hasn't explicitly said whether it will re-release the 1003HA and T91 pre-installed with the finished version of Windows 7 when it launches in coming months or whether it will produce upgraded versions closer to the final OS release.

    If netbooks can get

WIMAX rolling out faster to the general public, then more power to the netbook.
