Inventec intros handset with Qualcomm's mirasol LCD

updated 11:30 am EST, Mon February 16, 2009

Inventec mirasol handset

At the Mobile World Congress that has kicked off on Monday, Qualcomm and Inventec are showing the first smartphone to use Qualcomm's mirasol display, the Inventec V112. The 1.1-inch bichrome display sits below the main display and saves energy and is perfectly visible in broad daylight thanks to the technology inherent to its design. Mirasol screens use conductive plates to reflect light and change the wavelength to produce different colors in many small elements that make up each individual pixel.

The secondary mirasol will show the time, incoming call, missed call, e-mail and SMS alerts, MP3 song titles and track ID information. Both the main and the mirasol displays have touchscreen functionality, making for easy navigation of the V112's features. Via the mirasol display, users can control their MP3 playlists and manage incoming calls. The handset also includes Qualcomm's MSM7201A chipset that includes a GPS sensor along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. The Windows Mobile-based handset has an integrated 3-megapixel camera and comprehensive messaging, though what these involve is unknown.

The handset will be introduced in Europe at an unnamed date and the price has likewise been unannounced.
