Sony Ericsson teases touchscreen, 12MP Idou

updated 02:10 pm EST, Sun February 15, 2009

Sony Ericsson Idou

Continuing its introductions, Sony Ericsson provided an early glance at the Idou, its second-ever full touchscreen phone. The handset will be one of the firm's first to be based on pure Symbian instead of UIQ and will use a custom touch interface with an emphasis on media playback. Appropriately, it will also have a 3.5-inch, 16:9 ratio display and appears to rely solely on the screen for keyboard input. Sony Ericsson can also claim to be the first with a 12-megapixel camera onboard a phone and will give the device both a xenon flash and a retractable lens cover.

The Idou name is currently a placeholder for the phone, which has little extra confirmed information and will get more details sometime in the first half of 2009. A formal launch isn't expected until sometime in the second half of the year.

Adding the Idou is crucial to Sony Ericsson, which was one of the earliest members of the Symbian Foundation and whose decision helped shut down UIQ and force a change in mobile operating systems. The company so far only has the XPERIA X1 as an alternative to competing touchscreen phones from Apple, LG, Samsung and RIM and typically prices the X1 out of the range of its rivals. The absence of capable high-end devices in general has helped contribute to a 27 percent yearly sales drop at the company as well as a tumble in average sales prices.

Isn't Sony a sponsor of the ITA? The International Tennis Association? They continue to sponsor this anti-semite organization. I know this may not be the best place to rant, but what is? I'm a Christian, but I am stunned that the United Arab Emirates (?) decided the young Israeli girl could not enter the country even though she is seeded in the tournament? And both Sony and the ITA avert their eyes? This is what happened in Germany under the n*** regime. Everyone averted their eyes. Who will be next? I will never by from Sony - ever, and will make sure everyone I know hears of this.

This isn't really the correct place for this but I'll take the bait...

The player could not not enter the UAE because she was Israeli not because she was Jewish. This is a political rather than a racial discrimination issue.

BTW, you do realize that Arabs are of semitic background themselves dont you?

That is one h*** of an ugly looking phone. Did they run out of little buttons they could scatter hither and yon? Is Sony trying to go out of business?

I can't believe it. In this day and age, and Sony is teasing those poor touch screens. Such bullying should not be allowed...

The megapixel myth is getting out of hand.

12 megapixels is ridiculous for a "camera" of this size. With the small size of the lens and sensor, does anyone expect the thing to take decent pictures at 12MP?

I was thinking how nice looking it is; clean and spare, without a zillion little buttons and lights.

    Re: 12MP?

Yeah, 12 MP is insane. Diffraction alone pretty much guarantees you're going to get 12 million fuzzy pixels. No getting around the laws of physics on that one. And for how tiny the sensor cells must be, the noise and ISO range are going to be horrible. You'd get a better photo with a 4 MB sensor scaled up 300%.
