Novatel intros new devices

Novatel Wireless on Wednesday introduced three new products, including the Ovation MC995D USB modem as well as the Expedite E970D and E960D embedded mini card modules meant for OEM devices such as notebooks. All three devices have integrated GPS capabilities and access to high-speed HSPA networks, allowing them to reach 7.2Mbps download rates and up to 5.7Mbps upload speeds, with the MC995D and E970D made to work with Europe's, the Middle East's and Asia's 900MHz, 1,900MHz and 2,100MHz bands.

The Ovation MC995D will also support EDGE and GPRS networks, and has a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of storage. The MC995D has an automatic installation and connection manager for quick setup in Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

The embedded modems are backwards compatible and can automatically switch between GPRS, EDGE and 3G networks. The E960D has HSPA networks compatibility in the North American bands that include 850MHz, 1,900MHz and 2,100MHz. The modules have a three-channel receiver and offer PCM voice capabilities as an option.

No prices have been announced, although the MC995D USB modem will ship in the spring. There is no indication when the embedded modems will start showing up in OEM devices and is largely dependent on PC makers.
