Lite-On 24X DVD burners

Optical drive maker Lite-On on Monday announced the upcoming release of the industry's fastest internal DVD writers, capable of recording compatible blank DVDs at up to 24X speeds. Lite-On will release three versions of the fast drives, all with different additional capabilities, including Lite-On's LabelTag and SmartErase technologies that allow users to label data they are recording or erase data on CDs and DVDs, respectively.

SmartErase will be included in all three versions of the fastest DVD burners, while LabelTag will only be part of the range-topping iHAS624 burner. The feature allows users to create label tags on the data side of any blank disc, allowing them to burn data after making the label in separate recording sessions. SmartErase will let users permanently erase discs that contain sensitive and confidential data.

While no prices or software compatibility has been announced, the entry-level iHAS324 24X burner has a SATA interface and will be available in mid-March. The iHAP424 has a PATA interface and add LightScribe labeling capabilities, with the unit shipping at the end of March. The iHAS624 returns to SATA and has the LabelTag capability in addition to the iHAP424's features. It ships in mid-May.
