Intel to do PS4 graphics

The graphics processor in Sony's widely-expected PlayStation 4 console will be designed by Intel, a new report claims. The information is said to come directly from Sony staff at CES, who also indicate that the company is not happy with the way NVIDIA has treated it with regard to supplying PS3 technology. Intel by contrast is said to be a more reliable corporation, which should not only around for the introduction of the PS4 in 2012 but armed with plenty of cash.

Intel is in fact alleged to have bought its way into NVIDIA's position, as a means of furthering Larrabee, its new graphics architecture based on x86 processor cores. The company may additionally be in a position to design the rest of the PS4's architecture, but Sony is believed to be undecided on the matter so far. The PS3's Cell processor was designed by Sony in collaboration with Toshiba and IBM.

The Inquirer meanwhile cites "strong rumors" as suggesting that the successor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 will likewise abandon NVIDIA, in favor of chief rival ATI (owned by AMD). The follow-up to Nintendo's Wii console may rely on ATI graphics as well, though this would not be breaking with tradition. Both the Wii and 360 sequels are anticipated for 2012.

    360=ATI already

    Umm...MS has already ditched nvidia in favor of ATI for the 360. It was never official, but from the old news reports MS had a similar falling out with nvidia in the 2nd half of the original xbox's life cycle.

    Seems as if nvidia is greedy regarding console hardware and not willing to make progressively cheaper hardware as time and technology advance.
