HTC Snapdragon handsets

Taiwan's HTC will launch mobile phones in the second quarter of the year based on the ultra-fast 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, say market sources in the home country in a Thursday DigiTimes report. This news comes on the heels of Toshiba's announcement of its TG01 handset, also running the Snapdragon platform, which is said to begin shipping this summer in some European countries.

No other information is known about the HTC devices, though they are expected to have plenty of applications that can take advantage of the fastest chip to come from a smartphone, and at least include the usual smartphone features such as 3G data network access, Wi-Fi connections and a GPS sensors, all features the TG01 promises to have.

HTC and Toshiba are just two of more than ten mobile phone manufacturers that are working with Qualcomm to integrate the fast Snapdragon chipset into their devices, including Samsung, LG, Acer and ASUS, among others. HTC is also working on developing Intel Atom-based mobile devices, though the Snapdragon devices will be the first to hit the market.
