Nikon COOLPIX S PMA 2009

Nikon is continuing its camera introductions with multiple updates to its mid-range COOLPIX S series. The S630 stands as the flagship with an uncommonly long 7X zoom and a 12-megapixel sensor; it centers on a new, more easily gripped design and has some features drawn from the P90, including off-angle face detection, a boost to ISO 6,400 by lowering the resolution and a fast shooting mode that also shrinks the image size to capture at up to 11 frames per second. It and the other S series updates should ship in February, with the S630 selling for $280.

The S620 has the same resolution but a different design that emphasizes fashion with less common colors such as powder blue; it has a more modest 4X lens and will sell for slightly less at $270.

One touchscreen model joins the line. The S230 shoots at 10 megapixels with a 3X lens but has a 3-inch touch display that both makes navigation potentially easier as well as lets users customize the final image. A bundled stylus lets users draw on the image itself and add decals. Light sensitivity is limited to ISO 2,000 but helps lower the camera's price to $230.

Rounding out the S series updates, the S220 is a close relative of the S230 but switches to more conventional button controls and is slim at about 0.7 inches deep. Reverting to the more familiar scheme helps reduce the price to $150.
