Samsung 12MP Cameraphone

Samsung will try to garner attention at this month's Mobile World Congress by launching the world's first cellphone with a 12-megapixel camera, according to claims (registration required) picked up by the Korean newspaper Money Today. While few details are available of the phone itself, the sensor would be about 50 percent denser than the 8-megapixel sensors on the company's best cameraphones, such as the Pixon (shown) and INNOV8. Samsung historically gives these phones autofocusing as well as flash.

If accurate, the phone would make its public appearance at the MWC event in mid-month and would already be in mass production by the end of the month, with the aim of releasing the phone sometime afterwards. The launch would start with Europe first but isn't necessarily limited to the region; the Pixon is already believed on its way to AT&T and Rogers later this year.

Adding the stronger camera gives Samsung an advantage for its high-end cellphones, many of which also have touchscreens and so compete against relatively modest smartphones like Apple's iPhone and HTC's Touch Diamond, which have 2- and 3.2-megapixel cameras respectively; most camera-focused touchscreen phones, like the 5-megapixel LG Viewty. Is this a good thing?

The problem with jamming more and more pixels onto a tiny sensor is that you get greater amounts of sensor noise for any given ISO. So this means that you need either more light or longer exposures to get a good picture.

Unless you're taking pictures of stationary subjects in full daylight, I think the primary result of a 12MP camera phone is simply going to be larger file sizes.

I can get beautiful 11" x 14" enlargements from a 6MP camera, so I don't see why you'd want 12MP unless you have the optics to take advantage of the extra pixels.

    I agree . . .

wow . . . mega pixel envy at its best . . . larger file sizes = more HD space, and slower operations for network, printing jobs . . . if you actually print photos anymore, that is
