Mac online share peaks

Macs achieved their highest-ever online representation in January, figures from Net Applications reveal. Browser access from Mac OS systems reached 9.93 percent last month, a slight increase over December's 9.63 percent. The numbers reflect a continuing upward trend since at least March of last year, when Mac share was only 7.48 percent. Occasional drops -- experienced in April, July and October -- are noted to have been marginal.

January growth may have come mainly at the expense of Windows, which has been on a downward trend since March, and slipped again from December's 88.68 percent to to hit 88.26. Linux share dropped a minimal amount to 0.83 percent, while PlayStation and FreeBSD usage merely held steady at 0.04 and 0.01 percent, respectively.

Notable is that iPhone access grew from 0.44 to 0.48 percent, while "other" platforms rose in use from 0.35 percent to 0.45. The drive behind either factor is unknown, though they may have been influenced by increased post-Christmas smartphone ownership.

    As a...

...long time Mac user, I can say I have never before had so many inquiries from others about switching platforms to the Mac. It surprises me not.

It does not surprise me to see this and it's only the beginning... I think people are looking for a no non-sense computing. I am always amazed at the crowd level in the Apple Store near me. I get questions every time people see me using my MB Pro doing Windows stuff...

    Largest ever?

Seems to me, back in the '90's it was a much higher share than it is now. Of course, there wasn't much internet at the time, but it was still there.
