LaCie d2 Blu-ray 8X

LaCie at midday has launched a new version of its d2 Blu-ray Drive. The updated version now records write-once versions of the HD disc format at 8X and can theoretically burn a two hour movie in 15 minutes. It also burns fully copy-protected, studio-grade movies at 2X and performs more like a traditional DVD burner with single-layer burning at 16X and dual-layer at 8X.

The drive carries both FireWire 400 and USB interfaces and has a second FireWire port to daisy-chain the d2 with other peripherals and save expansion ports. Both Mac and Windows users get Roxio's Toast Titanium 9 and Easy Media Creator 10 to author Blu-ray discs, though only Windows users get playback software to watch Blu-ray movies.

LaCie is already shipping the d2 Blu-ray and prices it at $450.

    Why no FW800?

    Call me ...

... when the decimal place on that price moves over one to the left.

    Re: FW400

You're lucky they put any firewire on there at all, what with Apple basically bailing on it.

But to answer your question, more people have firewire 400 then firewire 800.

And if that isn't good enough for you, how about the fact that the mechanism is the bottleneck, so Firewire 800 doesn't do anything to improve the speed, so why waste the money? You might as well be complaining that your keyboard doesn't connect via firewire 800.
