iPhone users report sync problems after 2.2.1 update

updated 09:40 am EST, Fri January 30, 2009

iPhone firmware problems

Several reports have pointed to problems with iTunes crashing after installing the v2.2.1 firmware update on the iPhone. After running the update, a number of users have claimed that iPhones will no longer sync with iTunes. In some cases iPhones may sync for a short period of time, but eventually crash when attempting to delete songs.

Although one owner claims to have fixed the problem by running a full restore, other users have not been able to remedy the issue after a reset or a restore, or even re-installing iTunes. Apple has not yet verified if the update is the cause of the crashes, or when some form of solution might be available.

    No problems thus far

I was having occasional problems before the 2.2.1 update with iTunes locking up during the period immediately after the backup. I'd have to force-kill iTunes and then after attempting the next sync, I'd have to reboot the iPhone to get everything working again. I've seen no problems thus far with 2.2.1, although I've only done two syncs since the update.

    Exactly My Problem

I had this exact problem. updated, synced fine once, then itunes would crash everytime. Did a full restore of the phone, my mail and contacts etc restored fine but then syncing crashed it. so now i have no apps, music, or video on the phone. Tech support walked through all kinds of stuff and to no avail....

    Same problem here

Since upgrading to 2.2.1 and upgrading individual albums to iTunes plus, my iPhone gets stuck at the end of synchronization.

    It's Rocket Science

Apparently engineering an online service and software programs that are able to RELIABLY exchange simple pieces of information is very, very difficult and beyond the ability of anyone at Apple. Perhaps if they spent enough of their money, and scour for the earth for the most brilliant minds alive today, maybe they will finally be able to tackle something as epic and monumental as creating something that will be able to sync my contacts without me (a) having to babysit every sync to make sure it happens, (b) have to force reset syncs on a regular basis, (c) encounter situations where mobileme refuses to sync with my local pc, and (d) wonder why it is apparently so freaking hard for them to fix this. I'm sorry, but Apple has as much to be embarrassed about re: mobileme and their current sync setup as Microsoft does about Vista. There's no bigger fan of Apple than me, but they should be ashamed of themselves with this. It's inexcusable to me that, a full 8 months after launch, they are still unable to get it all working right.

    Thank you Macnn!

So glad you posted this. I just researched (as this has been happening to me for the last 4 days) and did a post about my solution below:

But I wanted to say thank you for getting some exposure to this very annoying iTunes crashing problem. Supposedly Apple engineers are working on it but they're not sure what's happening.
