updated 12:20 am EST, Fri January 30, 2009

EVONthink public beta 2

DEVONtechnologies has released the second public beta of DEVONthink 2.0 and DEVONnote 2.0. DEVONthink now allows PDF and text files to be split and merged, while PDF pages can be copied and pasted between documents. For both programs, the use of multi-threading is claimed to make RSS updates work much faster, and new options allow customization of how feeds are handled. Documents can be e-mailed from directly within the application and the smart group editor. The company has also improved support for files that contain PDF or HTML previews.

DEVONthink Pro Office now provides QuickLook-based previews, supports PDF viewing in several types of browsers, and separates lengthy item lists into several pages. The company claims that e-mail archiving is faster, while the reliability has been improved when converting databases and exporting files.

The public betas can be trialed for 150 hours of non-continuous use until March 31 before requiring an update to the next beta or the final release. DEVONthink Professional Office can be purchased for $150, while the Professional version is priced at $80. The Personal variant carries a price of $50, and DEVONnote can be obtained for $25. Free or discounted upgrades from earlier versions are also available.

While these may be useful features to SOME users, the lack of a modern tagging interface is desperately needed.

They keep saying they are revamping tagging, but until they do and show it in their betas, I have no reason to upgrade.
