Nokia 6700 6303 2700

Nokia hoped to raise the bar for mid-range phones today by launching three models that provide features normally left out of their price classes. The 6700 classic has features borrowed from Nseries smartphones and carries a 5-megapixel camera as well as GPS mapping. It also has HSPA-based 3G access that Nokia claims can download as quickly as 10Mbps. The metal-clad candybar phone is due to ship in spring for 235 Euros ($308) before carrier discounts and will work in the US thanks to quad-band GSM/EDGE, though its 3G is currently Europe-only.

The 6303 classic is positioned more as a media player and drops the 3G plus GPS while carrying a more modest 3.2-megapixel camera. Nokia in return gives the phone a 3.5mm headphone jack for better-quality music played from microSDHC cards. It also ships in the spring but will cost just 135 Euros ($177) before discounts. A lack of 850MHz support largely rules out North American use.

One final entry sets the floor for Nokia's middle line: the 2700 classic drops EDGE but still has a 2-megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD storage to serve as a budget MP3 player in addition to calls. The changes bring the price down to just 65 Euros ($85) for the 2700's spring introduction. It supports quad-band GSM and so should work in the US.
