AT&T and Apple considering subsidized MacBook?

ATT subsidized MacBook?

Glenn Lurie, AT&T's Emerging Devices president, has hinted that the company might be talking with Apple about subsidized notebooks tied in with wireless data contracts, according to an executive interview with Fortune. The wireless carrier has become increasingly interested in working with device manufacturers beyond the realm of handsets. Initially, the company has dabbled with lower-priced mobile computers such as netbooks.

A holiday promotion at Radio Shack dropped the price of an Acer netbook down to $99 with a two-year AT&T data plan. The marketing was fairly unique for the American market, but it actually worked "extremely well," according to Lurie. "That Acer one's a great example of how partnerships are going to work," he added. Upcoming promotions will include a Sony camera that automatically uploads photos, and a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook for $100.

Although Lurie declined to provide any details about talks with Apple, he did mention that he had sat down with COO Tim Cook a few minutes before the Fortune interview. "We're having conversations with lots of folks," he noted. "I would very much like to do more business with Apple, and hope that we do."

    Uh Oh

Does this mean I'm going to have to unlock/jailbreak my Macbook if I decide I hate AT&T or want to use it abroad?

    Too much to ask

So would an integrated WWAN card be too much to ask? Please Apple, free me from the WWAN dongle.

    Confused ...

How is this different from the bundling of cheap computers with internet service that they tried in the mid to late 90s?

Also, how would this work for people who already use AT&T, or those who want to buy 2 computers? Would you have to pay a connection fee for every computer in your household?

    AT&T must do more

AT&T must do more business with Apple, otherwise they will do less. If Apple feels the exclusive iPhone contract with AT&T is hampering their game, they can obviously invent another device which is not a phone, and go with another carrier, and AT&T knows this.

So, the subsidized price MacBook has got to be a happening thing. And my guess would be that with their already high Margins, Apple can still take away enough over the course of teh data contract to make everyone happy, ATT, Apple, and me, the future MacBook customer.
