Moto Drops Win Mo Staff

The South Florida Business Journal has supported doubts regarding the fate of Windows Mobile at Motorola by revealing that that cellphone designer is cutting 77 positions at its office in Plantation, near Fort Lauderdale. The move is described as very specific for Motorola and will put an end to developing Windows Mobile phones at the Florida location. The particular cuts are slated to take place by March 27th.

Motorola doesn't explain the motivation behind these specific layoffs but comes after the American company said it would drop 4,000 jobs worldwide in a plan that is rumored to cut as much as half of its entire mobile team ahead of spinning off the group as a separate company.

Observers increasingly expect the RAZR developer to center on Android for many of its future phones and so would create a potentially major setback for Microsoft, which considers Motorola one of its more significant Windows Mobile partners and has allegedly been making cuts to Windows Mobile ranks as part of plans to trim unnecessary costs.
