MacBook Air rival from Quanta in the wings?

updated 10:05 am EST, Fri January 23, 2009

Quanta MacBook Air Rival

Normally known only for manufacturing notebooks for others, Quanta is making a system of its own that would compete against Apple's MacBook Air in dimensions but aim at the low end, alleged tips from within the PC industry suggest to Digitimes. The system would measure between just 1-2cm (0.79-0.39in) thick but would be a step in quality above large netbooks like the MSI X-Slim 320, which uses an Intel Atom to keep its price down despite a 13.4-inch display.

What specifications the system will rely on are unknown, though MSI itself plans an upgrade to a Pentium dual-core processor for the X-Slim that will give it traditional notebook performance. Quanta is believed to have completed development of its system but hasn't set a schedule for mass production and thus isn't likely to ship the system for the next few months at the earliest.

    or

maybe this is a laptop they're designing to sell to other makers (not Apple, but like Dell, Acer, Gateway, or just your usual 2-bit PC manufacturer).

    Here we go again!

It CANNOT be a rival to Apple unless it runs OSX. No one who wants an Apple and OSX is going to buy a Quanta computer running any of the dreaded versions of softwhere by Micro$hit.

Please stop calling any computer that comes out an Apple "Killer", "Rival", etc.

Wait, but if there are no rivals, then Apple is a monopoly. Looks like Psystar can start up their antitrust case again!
