Nokia Ships 1m 5800 Phones

Nokia has finished the week by revealing on Friday that it has shipped 1 million copies of its 5800 XpressMusic touchscreen phone. The Symbian S60 device has reached the milestone roughly two months after its November ship date and despite relatively limited availability early in the year that limited the phone to a just a handful of regions that include Hong Kong and Russia. About half of this number was shipped just in December, the company has also mentioned in discussing its financial performance yesterday.

The benchmark lines up with today's official launch of the 5800 in the UK and, according to Nokia, resulted in long lines for those eager to get the officially sanctioned release in the country. About 150 people waited in the morning to buy the device at Nokia's large Regent Street store in London, though reports from other stores aren't available.

How the launch compares to that for its competitor at Apple is uncertain. Estimates from Pocket-lint suggest that the line at the Nokia store was longer than for the iPhone 3G at Apple's own store on the same street, which topped 100 people. However, the iPhone launch was a second-wave release and was softened by greater distribution that allows O2 and Carphone Warehouse to sell the phone in addition to Apple's own locations. Nokia is for now limiting sales to its own online and retail stores and sells the device unlocked.

Sales are expected to increase significantly for the phone as a result of the UK launch, which costs than the iPhone despite having a higher-resolution screen and camera along with similar storage, GPS and Wi-Fi. The 5800 is already available in the US but ships only as an unsubsidized, unlocked model without North American 3G support.

and a store employee has confirmed that it functions on Fido's 3G network.
