updated 04:00 pm EST, Thu January 22, 2009

Huawei Android phone

Chinese network provider and cellphone manufacturer Huawei has recently announced it would show off a rumored handset based on the open-source Android platform from Google at the Mobile World Congress in Spain on February 16th. The company has not revealed any other details on the handset, saying only it will be the first mobile phone based on a single UMTS chipset.

Apart from the unnamed Android handset Huawei will show in the Mobile U-life section of its booth at the show, Huawei will also have on display what it claims to be the world's first commercial HSPA+ stick and the smallest ever wireless modem. The company's latest wireless digital photo frame will also be shown.

There are no indications of when or if the Android-based Huawei handset is coming to the US, a market in which the company is represented only with the entry-level M328 handset sold through MetroPCS.

At the Congress, Samsung and HTC are also expected to show off Android-based handsets. [via GearLog]
