Rogers adds rugged phones

Rogers Wireless on Wednesday announced it has added a pair of rugged handsets to its offerings, with the Samsung Rugby A836 and ZTE Rock F165. Both are exclusive to Rogers in the Canadian wireless market with each offering unique features. The Rugby has a large external speaker, the ability to access 3G high-speed data networks and is compliant with the US military's 810F specification for resistance to rain, shock, altitude and temperature extremes.

Other, more commonly found features of the handset include a 1.3-megapixel camera, 130MB of internal memory expandable up to 8GB thanks to a microSD memory card slot. The phone also supports music download and playback and has Bluetooth capabilities built-in.

The ZTE Rock, meanwhile, supports wireless video calls and can run on Rogers' 3.5G HSPA network, able to reach download speeds of 7.2Mbps. It has a 176x220-resolution screen along with 128MB of integrated memory that is expandable up to 2GB via a microSD card slot. Its 2-megapixel camera can capture still images as well as videos, and the handset will play back digital music files, has a built-in radio tuner and is compatible with mobile TV. A Bluetooth module is built-in as well.

The Samsung Rugby is being offered now for nearly $150 CAD with a three-year contract, while the ZTE Rock is available for $80 CAD with the same commitment.
