Q109 results call preview
Mixed expectations are in place for Apple's fiscal first quarter results call, set for Wednesday at 2PM Pacific time, or 5PM Eastern. Those not participating directly in the phone call will be able to listen in via a QuickTime webcast, and hear rebroadcasts for the next several days.
A widespread worry among analysts is that the results will show serious damage from the global recession, particularly in terms of the iPhone, which is often seen as one of Apple's most expensive products and more likely to be shunned by people with insecure jobs. Sales are thought to have fallen 24 percent in the quarter, though total shipment projections range from a consensus 5 million to as much as 6.4 million.
iPod shipments are expected to remain healthy at around 19 to 20 million units, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Mac units remain questionable however, due to a balance between economic problems and reinvigorated interest, triggered by the release of new unibody MacBooks. Consensus views have called for approximately 2.5 million computers.
