Sony VAIO GS budget ultraportable reaches FCC

updated 02:35 pm EST, Wed January 14, 2009

Sony VAIO GS at FCC

An FCC filing has surfaced today that suggests Sony has been developing a new ultraportable that would skew towards the budget range. Badged as the VAIO GS, the system would a rare modern example of a 4:3 ratio Sony notebook and would near netbook territory with a roughly 12-inch screen size. While slim, the computer will be thick enough to have an optional built-in optical drive.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and readers for both expansion and memory cards are mentioned in the filing, though the actual computing aspects aren't mentioned in the description and leave no clue as to whether the system is an Atom-based netbook or else a full-feature notebook. Stylistically, however, the system is a close relative of the old VAIO G and may be a successor to the computer, which used ultra-low voltage Core 2 and Celeron processors.

A launch isn't slipped out with the filing, though the relatively complete state of the notebook alludes to a relatively close launch within the next few months. [via Engadget]
