iSteam rises in ranks
The recently-released iSteam app has quickly ascended the App Store ranks, with more than one million downloads in just its first week. The steam simulator sustained a 14 percent daily growth last week, rising to the number ten spot amongst entertainment apps in 40 countries. The group of 22-year-olds are raking in an estimated monthly revenue of $100,000. The app on Wednesday holds the number seven spot in the App Store. Other novelty titles that have received attention, iFart and iBeer, hold the second and third positions, respectively.
iSteam provides virtual steam on the screen, which users can wipe away with the swipe of a finger. Water even beads on the surface and runs down from where the cleared areas are, following the direction of gravity based on the accelerometer input.
The developers plan to release version 1.2 soon, which is claimed to include significant improvements and new features. The current release, iSteam 1.1, is available from iTunes for $1.

Just think of how much money they could make if they made something actually worthwhile!
And how do they get 1 million downloads in one week, but only $100,000 monthly revenue?

testudo, 1 million downloads isn't the monthly figure. It's the downloads to date.
If they made $100k/month, that's 70% of what the revenues were. That means they sell about 145k copies per month. That's a 6-7 month time to 1 million downloads.
Obviously, if this is 4 months (and change) in, then they're seeing more like 200-250k downloads per month, and a more than $100k per month. It's probably been averaged out, so they're seeing something like 300k downloads per month now, vs 100k in the first month, and they're earning a lot more now, but it averages out to $100k when you factor in the early days.

...how a 99 cent app that does nothing makes them rich, but if someone releases an actually useful application, and charges a reasonable price for it such ($4.99 - $9.99) people complain it's too expensive.

For another mindless but hilarious app, take a look at Whassup in the app store -- better than farts at least.
