Canon SD Cams at CES

In addition to its just-updated HD models, Canon on Monday has also seen fit to revamp its standard definition camcorders with CES in mind. The FS22, FS21 and FS200 are trimmed in size and as much as 17 percent smaller than their FS1x equivalents. The FS21 and FS22 also hold more internal storage and carry 16GB and 32GB respectively of flash memory, with the latter option holding as much as 7 hours and 20 minutes of video at full quality. SDHC cards are usable on all three devices.

Both the FS21 and FS22 are also better-suited to long distance shooting with 48X zoom lenses, while the FS200 serves as the entry version with a simpler 37X lens as well as more fanciful blue, silver and wine red shell colors.

Canon continues to support its legacy formats and is introducing the DC410 and DC420 for those who prefer to record directly to DVDs. Little separates the cameras beyond their optical zoom, which reaches 41X in the basic DC410 and moves up to 48X on the DC420. A single MiniDV model, the ZR960, is considered the starter model and the only camera here to use FireWire for offloading video. It uses a 41X lens.

The SD cameras will be the first to ship in Canon's CES line and, with the exception of the ZR960, will all be available in January. The MiniDV model will arrive in March, the company says. Pricing isn't yet available for any of the new offerings.
