Palm Nova Phone Leak

Palm's upcoming phone and the Nova operating system it will use will both be major changes from the products the company sells today, a leak to CrunchGear claims. Targeting the iPhone directly, the device will reportedly drop Palm's longstanding design in favor of a full touchscreen; a hardware QWERTY keyboard will be available but will slide down rather than stay fixed. HTC is believed to be the manufacturer for the phone rather than a strict assembly-only firm.

Nova itself is characterized as "amazing" and will have a host of apps available when the first phones using the software ship. Few details of the Linux-based software have accompanied the slip but should include a media playback suite as well as familiar equivalents to calendaring, contacts and e-mail. Previous reports have alluded to backwards compatibility with earlier Palm OS apps and a stronger emphasis on the touchscreen.

While actual release information is still an unknown, the new phone has already been deemed virtually necessary for Palm, which shipped just 600,000 phones in its most recent fiscal quarter and has posted steadily mounting losses as it develops and transitions to Nova while also revamping the Centro and Treo.

    This so-called "leak"

is in reality, A PRESS RELEASE! Palm desperately needs to hype this operating system, otherwise, they will go under. They either succeed with this OS or die (and by succeed, I mean they either sell a lot of phones with this OS or they manage to get somebody else to buy them to gain access to this OS).

Palm CEO Ed Colligan when asked about rumors of an Apple phone in late 2006 :

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone," he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.'"

this should be included in any and all Palm stories.

    Nice Bizarro look!

I always liked to hear Colligan make that quote. I haven't heard him make any statements about the iPhone since that time. Let's just say he was a man with less than adequate vision of the future.

And as for all the Palm users who continue to say that their three-year-old handsets were in everyway superior to the iPhone, they must be really looking for something to crow about with this new handset. Good luck on them trying to compete against a Snow Leopard-powered iPhone with a touch-screen Nova-powered model.
