Sony VAIO P to near $1,000?

More Sony VAIO P Specs

Sony's VAIO P netbook may contain hardware that renders it twice as expensive as many rivals, according to additional hardware leaks from NetbookNews. The system is now believed to have a 1.33GHz Atom after all but may also have extra features that boost the price; the 3G modem and a GPS receiver are now potentially standard rather than strictly optional. Previous reports have also pointed to a unique eight-inch, 1600x900 display.

A system with these specifications is believed to cost as much as 700 Euros in Germany, or the equivalent of $975. It's not known whether this incorporates tax or whether there are lower-end models, but the price as-is would be significantly above systems like Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 or HP's Mini 1000; both of these typically cost under $600 when equipped with 3G and regularly cost under $400 in basic trim.

Sony is expected to confirm American pricing and specs for the VAIO P when it launches the system at CES next week.

    Sony Sony Sony sigh

I like the specs, but why force the price up with non-optional, expensive options that many folks will never use? How about a version without the 3G and GPS???
