Beta unlock for iPhone 3G now available
As promised in December, the unofficial iPhone Dev Team has released an initial beta version of yellowsn0w, its new iPhone hack. The code represents the first serious software effort to unlock the iPhone 3G, which has otherwise resisted any hacking beyond basic jailbreaking. Applying the unlock currently requires the use of Cydia or Installer.
The Dev Team also notes that yellowsn0w operates only with the 02.28.00 baseband, associated with the iPhone 2.2 firmware; people wanting to use the hack must first get Apple's firmware through iTunes, then run QuickPwn to activate. The app also continues to have some more serious limitations, such as potential conflicts with SIM Toolkit menus, and an inability to function with cards that have PIN numbers enabled. Owners of T-Mobile cards must disable 3G in their iPhone's settings.
