Rogue Amoeba unveils Pulsar SIRIUS/XM client

updated 05:40 pm EST, Fri January 2, 2009

Pulsar sat radio client

Rogue Amoeba has unveiled Pulsar, a desktop client for listening to XM Radio Online and SIRIUS Internet Radio. Subscribers to the satellite radio services can use the program to access both corresponding web-based versions, without using extra hardware or a browser. Listings are continuously updated with station and current song information, while users can also save any favorite stations. The client can work with Audio Hijack Pro and Airfoil for recording streams or distributing the audio via AirPort Express.

Pulsar requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher and can be downloaded for a free trial, with the highest quality audio available for 20 minutes. The software is still in a public preview stage, although a license key can be purchased for $15. A complimentary license is available for new and existing customers of other Rogue Amoeba products.

I went to check this out and didn't know about the free copy for existing customers. I found that and was surprised that they would do this. The software is buggy and will get better. The link to the free copy is here: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/store/deals/ComplimentaryPulsar.php

StarLightXM is Free!

I've been following the beta of StarLightXM (and the previous Starplayr) for awhile now and have been very impressed with the progress.

You can grab the latest beta from the forums at Nicemac.com

Most importantly, its free, lightweight, and it works.

Why...

01/04, 10:42am reply

Maybe it will keep a stream going for longer than 3 hours (or whatever the web interface stops at) if you don't s**** around with it.

And some people might like the ability to listen to XM quickly, without having to fire up a browser, go to the right page, log in, find the channel you want, etc...

The problem I have with it is that it only works with 10.5. Guess I'm off to check out Starlight XM!

starlightXM

OK, so I downloaded Starlight XM to see what's the hype all about. Yes, it's convenience because it saves your log in info. It takes much less steps to fire up the music than using a browser. Another neat feature is if you like the song, there's a button that takes you straight to iTunes to purchase it. The only down side is the Mac version seems a bit behind the PC counterpart on user interface's end. Also they do already have the app for iPhone.

Nice!

Nice holiday gift for current users! Thanks RA! Now, I'm guessing to improve quality, I have to upgrade my sirius account to 128kbps for $2.99/mo....
