Mobinnova ICE smartphone

The upcoming XPERIA range of handsets from Sony Ericsson will be built in conjunction with Taiwan's Mobinnova, which itself has recently introduced its Windows Mobile based smartphone, the ICE. It features a 3-inch touchscreen that responds to users' touch with a tactile response courtesy of Mobinnova's mobiFeel technology. The quad-band GSM handset also supports the 900MHz, 1,900MHz and 2,100MHz WCDMA/HSPA bands. High-speed HSDPA download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and HSUPA upload speeds as fast as 2Mbps are supported.

The smartphone's features also include assisted GPS functionality and there is a b/g Wi-Fi radio integrated. Onboard storage is restricted to 256MB but can be expanded via a microSD card. Photos are captured on the back panel-mounted 3-megapixel autofocus camera with a dedicated shutter button, while a front-mounted camera allows for video calls. An integrated FM radio tuner with RDS/RBDS functionality offers entertainment.

The ICE uses a 528MHz Qualcomm chip and 128MB of RAM to run the Windows Mobile 6.1 professional interface and its applications. A planned US release date for the Mobinnova ICE has not been announced, with pricing also unavailable. [via SlashPhone]

They can gloss up the first couple of screens so it superficially looks like the iPhone, and it understands some basic touch operations on those screens, but underneath it all, it's Windows Mobile, with it's lame tiny menu's and crappy UI. h***, if anything, having a touch-only input method makes Windows Mobile suck more, as it depends on standard input methods (namely, a full keyboard and a mouse/joystick) to be usable.
