Refurbished iPhones going for $49 until Jan. 1st [u]

$49 refurb iPhones

(Updated for accuracy)AT&T is now selling refurbished 8GB iPhones for $99. The phones are a full $100 less than their newer counterparts, though they are still attached to a customary two-year contract. AT&T is similarly offering refurbished 16GB models for $199, in both black and white colors.

Buyers of the 8 or 16GB models should additionally get free, two-day priority shipping, though this does not apply during holidays. This helps make the refurbished phones the cheapest legal way of buying an iPhone, as even Walmart is charging a minimum of $197.

Update: Through December 31st, AT&T is offering an additional $50 discount, bringing iPhone prices to as low as $49 and $149.

    ugh

Considering that my wife would need an iPhone as well, it will cost me an additional $80/month from my existing plan.

I just can't justify that cost. I would love to be able to buy an iPhone sans data plan and be restricted to using it on the wifi network for anything other than a phone/text messaging station.

    Offer

Regular price on refurbished iPhones from AT&T is $149/$249. The extra $50 off brings the prices to $99/$199, there isn't another $50 more off from that.

    Upgrade?

Has anyone figured out how to upgrade an existing iPhone using this deal?

    Can add AppleCare?

Can an AppleCare extended warranty be added to these phones? Or are we stuck with the 90-day warranty?

    Just got off the phone

with AT&T. They refuse to honor that price for current customers.

    what???

This deal only works for new customers? How dare they!

And if you already have an iPhone, why do you need to buy a new one?

Why would your wife NEED an iPhone as well? Can you not get one by yourself? Or is it one of those matrimonial "What I get she has to get" kind of things?

Of course, your wording implies that you NEED to get an iphone, which makes no sense either.

    sigh

I'd be on this in a second, if only they offered pre-paid plans. I just lost my current pre-paid phone over the holidays, and need a replacement. $70 a month minimum, when I currently spend about $10 a month for minutes. Plus, text messages are extra with AT&T, or $.20 per text, when my pre-paid plan is $.10 a message. Despite my insane desire, I'm obviously I'm not the target market for this product.
