Nokia touchscreen Classic

Nokia is apparently set to introduce a new candybar handset, the 6208 Classic, which would be the Finnish company's first product that combines a touchscreen with a conventional alphanumeric keypad and is believed to run on a modified Symbian S40 interface to support the touchscreen functionality or a newly developed OS. In contrast, the company's N97 touchscreen smartphone use the newer Symbian S60 OS. The handset is believed to be slated for China, where touchscreens make entering the plethora of writing characters.

The the quad-band EDGE handset otherwise sports a 2.8-inch TFT touchscreen display with 240x320 resolution. The integral 27MB of memory is supplanted by a microSD card. Still and moving images can be captured via the 6208's integrated 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. China's 3G data network, which uses a different standard than North America's, will be supported, as will Bluetooth.

Pricing or release information for the 6208 Classic is unkown, but the handset is believed to be meant for the Chinese market only. [via UnwiredView]

    S40 not based on Symbian

S40 in Nokia is Nokia's low end's proprietary phone sw stack. It has nothing to do with Symbian. Symbian is the OS under S60 User Interface.

Putting touch in S40 is an interesting move and means that S40 will be used on relatively pricey phones for few years (competing with their own Symbian phones). They have not done the effort of touch support just for one phone model.
