Boxee public alpha
Boxee has announced that the alpha version of its media player will soon be opened to the public. The open-source project has drawn over 150,000 applicants to test the software. Users will be able to play a wide range of digital video formats, images, and music. Integrated social networking features allow content to be reviewed or recommended. Recent updates added Netflix support and interface enhancements for Hulu, CNN, Flickr and Picasa.
The public release will initially be available to Mac and Ubuntu users. Due to the backlog of applicants, the company anticipates catching up with invites by December 25th and completely opening the alpha by January 8th.
