T-Mobile axes upgrade fee

Wireless provider T-Mobile announced on Wednesday it has immediately dropped its $18 upgrade fee that applies to customers who wish to upgrade their current handsets to a newer device. This will apply to all handsets, including high-end models like the T-Mobile G1, and all sales channels, including in-store and online.

T-Mobile is quick to point out the cancellation of the fee is not a limited-time promotion timed just in time for the holidays, as there is no pre-defined end date for the offer.

Either way, the move is believed timed to encourage more buyers to spend money at T-Mobile in light of the poor US economic situation and to fight offerings from competitors, which sometimes themselves implement upgrade fees but don't necessarily apply them as universally as T-Mobile has until today.
