Sony Touch Walkman Rumor

Sony is on the verge of releasing a touchscreen player as its headlining Walkman, a rumor from historically reliable Sony Insider says. Alleged sources say the electronics maker's first touch music device for the West will have a three-inch touch OLED that will give the player especially high color accuracy for video. It should also have Wi-Fi and use this not only to support web browsing and a YouTube viewer but also to subscribe to audio podcasts and Crackle videos. Users could also buy music directly through Amazon MP3.

Players should come with either 16GB or 32GB of flash memory to keep the player thin, but Sony is reputedly finding room for an FM radio as well as a relatively strong digital amp. The device is said to have a 400x240 resolution and hardware controls for volume and skipping tracks.

When the Walkman would be available in stores is unknown, though Sony usually has a quick launch process for its players and is price competitive with Apple devices at similar price points.

    too bad...

Too bad Sony couldn't write usable complex software to save their lives (literally in this case). The iPhone/iPod Touch is a wide OS platform with legs; unless this thing is an open Linux computer in my pocket with a smooth interface, it's another also-ran-to-be...

    No chance, Sony

Yeah, Weasel is right. I'm a self-confessed Sonywhore, but even I acknowledge that Sony comes way behind even Microsoft in the usable software department. Their hardware is superb, but Sony always falls down on their terrible software. I have a Sony digital picture frame. You have to set the time in 24-hour format, but the display can only show time in 12-hour format. D'oh. Got me a Sony PS3, Reader, PSP, Clie, Sony Store account, Bravia XBR HDTV -- a torrent of "d'oh, d'oh, d'ohs." Is it the hardware or the constant feelings of disappointment that I love more?

    Clie 2.0?

Which is the same as saying WhoCares 2.0

As long as they keep up the catchy series of monikers... PEG-VZ90 just rolls off the tongue...

With the high cost of OLEDs right now, what is the chance that Sony would even think of releasing this in the near future and at what cost?

How long before the iTouch has an OLED screen? I'm stoked.

    A Light Year Too Late

once again Sony is so badly behind the Apple 'curve.'

Without a user-friendly App Store and 10,000 apps, no matter how good the rest of the technology may be it is just dog p*** compared to the Touch. and think it will be cross-compatible with Sony-Erricson phones? hah!
