Quanta intro Optical Touch

Taiwan's Quanta Computer revealed a new touchscreen technology recently at the WinHEC Taipei 2008 expo. Called Optical Touch, it uses two cameras placed in the top corners of the display instead of a capacitive or resistive touch panel and will be compatible with Microsoft Windows 7. The cameras track users' finger positions and move the pointer accordingly and support multi-touch gestures including rotate and zoom.

The technology is less costly than traditional touch panels because it requires only two cameras, but this advantage is minimized as panel sizes decrease, Quanta reps say. The company has already tested its new technology in monitors and notebook PCs, and will begin mass production soon, it says, although no specific prices or release dates have been announced.
