Apple aims to patent 'multi-dimensional' Mac desktop

'Multi-dimensional' Mac OS

Apple may be seeking to expand on some of the cosmetic changes in Mac OS X Leopard to make them more informative, a newly-published patent filing reveals. The filing, titled Multi-Dimensional Desktop, superficially depicts the current Leopard desktop, with the standard Menu Bar and three-dimensional Dock. In detail however the patent shows a desktop in which the 3D is more than an aesthetic touch, and signals a relationship between different items.

In the envisioned desktop, the 3D plane would extend past the Dock, allowing icons and windows to be positioned behind it. More crucially, the icons could depict information not typically available in Mac OS X, such as quick access to document types like images, music or downloads. Icons could be stacked along the Z-axis, and expand to display or open their contents.

A future OS might also be capable of displaying programs as operating behind the Dock, and even wrap them around to new 3D side panels. Both programs and icons could be kept in these panels, allowing people to stash items out of the way while still keeping them instantly accessible.

Perhaps the most radical interpretation of the patent would have the background of the OS shaped into an oval, and the side panels transformed into one continuous cone. In this configuration extra icons could be positioned to the sides of the Dock, rather than just behind it.

    OMG

Hey, it's Microsoft Bob! Now where's that stupid dog hiding?

Looking forward to another dimension to cram more clutter on my desktop though...

    Apple's kinetics

This type of thing is why Apple is always way ahead of their "competition." For some reason the "thinking" culture doesn't seem to exist elsewhere.

As to cramming your desktop... I doubt it. I am sure the methodology will be to use only what you need. Maybe WiseWeasel would be more happy at MS where it seems that innovation is at a standstill.

    lol

I was thinking the exact same thing about microsoft bob.

What I would really like to see is better integration on a home network. I want to be able to sit at any mac, log in and see MY desktop even if it's on another physical machine. yeah, you can share folders and even share a screen, but that's not the same thing. I want something like NIS but done in a typical Apple it's easy enough for an idiot to do way.

    Windows 8 protection

Since Win 7 is going to rip off elements of the Mac OS, this should help Apple put up a barrier so that when Apple's next step makes the current interface look OS 9 does today, all the good ideas aren't as easy to steal.

    MIB Did the Oval Display

The oval OS X display was done back in 1997. Watch the big oval screen in the "Men in Black" headquarters, sometime. You can clearly see items magnifying in the Dock below.

    interesting

I trust Apple will make this look pretty. there have been tons of 3D desktop and finder replacements since 1997, but this look like it has potential.

    Woo hoo

Great. Instead of attempting to explain over the phone to my mother how to do something in 2D, now I will need to explain it in 3D. Thanks a lot.

    oooh

Will we have to wear the funny glasses to get the 3-D effect?

We'll get to say "It's a UNIX system! I know this!" as we navigate to save ourselves from the rampaging clones.
