Verizon releases BlackBerry Storm firmware update

updated 04:00 pm EST, Fri December 5, 2008

Verizon Storm update

Verizon has officially released the 4.7.0.75 firmware update today for the BlackBerry Storm handset made by Research In Motion (RIM). The update addresses the newly released handset's numerous issues, including a large amount of lag, voice-dialing problems and need to perform reboots. While the update was leaked to a select few Storm users last week, this release will cover all Storm owners.

Verizon is initially and currently offering the software update via its Desktop Software Manager and via the Internet, with users getting the over-the-air software at 9:30pm PST today.

A newer update in development, 4.7.0.76, has been spotted, and is said to further address the issues while providing about 25 percent more battery life. Testing of this leaked and unofficial update, however, revealed it is not yet ready for release, as it introduces new problems, including an issue with the camera interface and the back button. The update is due to increase response time further from the current several seconds for tasks that include rotating to landscape mode, browsing photos or playing music. There is no word on when or if RIM or Verizon will release 4.7.0.76. [via Crave]
