AMD lowers Q4 outlook

Chipmaker AMD on Thursday announced that it expects revenue for its fourth quarter of 2008, ending on December 27th, to be about 25 percent lower than those from the third quarter, or about $1.2 billion. The new forecast does not include revenue from AMD's process technology licenses and stems from lower than expected demand around the world, but particularly in the consumer business, according to the company.

In October, AMD split its operations into a semiconductor manufacturing business to be called The Foundry Company and the current design firm in an attempt to become more profitable in the long term.

The company's Phenom II chips, meant to compete with Intel's Core i7 CPUs in the consumer market, are due to arrive in early 2009. The chips are expected to reach clock speeds as fast as 4GHz on conventional air-cooling, though the fastest Phenom II chip available to customers, the X4 940, will be rated at 3.0GHz. Observers believe the release of the Phenom II chips, may finally give AMD the strong product range it needs in the consumer market to successfully compete with the likes of Intel.

AMD's full fourth-quarter results will be reported after markets close on January 22nd.
