Verizon Drops Omnia Price

Verizon on Monday has already dropped the price on the Samsung Omnia less than a week after its introduction. Originally priced at $250 with a contract and a $70 rebate, the device will now cost $200 with the same discount and now almost matches the pricing of both the BlackBerry Storm as well as the iPhone 3G, which has an inferior two-megapixel camera but shares a similar 8GB of built-in storage, 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi.

The Windows Mobile smartphone is along with the Storm considered one of Verizon's linchpin cellphones for the holidays and is potentially crucial to sustaining the company's growth during the fall, as the season's usual spike in sales may be offset by a weak US economy. Verizon grew slowly in the summer and is believed by some to have been hurt by a small number of its customers switching to AT&T for the iPhone.

    Of course they would..

How else is the Omnia going to compete with the iPhone unless it's the same price or less. If it was a better handset, they wouldn't have had to drop the price. People would just automatically flock to it regardless of it's price. I suppose Verizon doesn't want to lose anymore customers. If they could make it $50 cheaper maybe they could steal iPhone customers from AT&T. I keep hearing about how great this Omnia is with it's wonderful keyboard. Good luck to them.
