VIZIO ups 120Hz XVT to 55in, adds PC/TV display

updated 09:05 am EST, Thu November 20, 2008

VIZIO in a pre-Thanksgiving move today upgraded its XVT sets to include a new 55-inch flagship model. The 1080p LCD set still has the 120Hz panel to compensate for motion blur and boosts the dynamic contrast ratio to 50,000:1, putting the budget set closer to those from more expensive labels. It also carries an unusually extensive five HDMI inputs and a signature Game Port layout that puts both video and sound inputs for consoles next to each other to avoid spreading cables across the back of the set.

Despite the timing of the news, the 55-inch XVT set doesn't ship until January but will cost a relatively small $2,000 when it goes on sale.

Also unveiled today is the company's previously hinted-at hybrid computer and TV display, the VMM26. At 26 inches, the 1920x1200 screen is capable of playing 1080p video through either of two HDMI inputs but also has DVI and VGA connections for computer displays as well as a three-port USB hub for peripherals. VIZIO claims a 2,000:1 contrast ratio and 3ms pixel response time, and says the display is shipping today for $430.

The American TV vendor has also formally launched its promised budget sound bar and wireless subwoofer combo. Known as the VSB210WS, the two-piece system has both a main bar with four mid-range/bass drivers and a tweeter as well as a dedicated 2.4GHz subwoofer that handles frequencies between 35Hz and 80Hz. It arrives in January for $350.

In a final launch, three small HDTVs also join the range. The 19-inch VA19, 22-inch VA22 and 26-inch VA26 have a new more industrial look, while the VA22 set is VIZIO's smallest-ever 1080p set and generates a relatively high 5,000:1 contrast ratio. The screens ship today and sell for $250, $350 and $450 respectively.

    Can't wait

I've been keeping my eye on the VP505XVT that has gotten such good reviews, but I may have to wait now for the 55" Vizio XVT! It looks amazing and if it has the same processor and the TruSurround HD it is going to be amazing. I'm happy to wait as long as I get it before the Super Bowl.
