Toshiba adds 500GB drive

Toshiba on Tuesday unveiled a new 500GB 2.5-inch SATA drive featuring whisper quiet operation. The flagship MK5055GSX offers an 8MB buffer, and a read/write power consumption of 1.4W. Toshiba claims that the improved servo mechanism not only decreases the operational noise, but also increases durability of the hardware. Pricing was not readily available, but Toshiba expects to ship the drive in January, and will exhibit the drive at CES 2009 in January.

The MK5055GSX offers a free-fall sensor option to protect against falls, and the entire drive is designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, as well as complying to other environmental standards.

    Less CO2

Oh yeah, just what I was looking for. I knew if I clicked this article I'd find some environmental twist. So in addition to not drinking carbonated drinks and belching so much I'm also going to hold my breath for one week. Awesome, this will save the planet. The rest of you non-elites should not buy this and should take advantage of the new law in Oregon for assisted self-termination so as not to use more of mother earth's precious resources so I can at least live a little bit.

    Plant A Tree

Buy this drive and plant a tree (co2 offset).

On another note, considering the drive is 5400RPMs hows the speed specs? At 500GB on a 2.5 drive I would guess its quite impressive. The Toshiba site is sparse on this type of info.

    new servos suck CO2

This drive emits less CO2? I don't see how that's possible; I was under the impression that my existing drive emits zero CO2. To emit less, this drive would actually have to suck the CO2 into itself and never let it out.Perhaps this is a function of the improved servo mechanism. You gotta believe the old servos could never do that! This story would be a lot more interesting if it was a drive you could actually get in a MacBook computer. I'm just sayin'.

The L640-L655 Toshibas have a serious software and BIOS issue with the cooling fan. The issue is well-documented on the official Toshiba forum. The cooling fan runs fast and loud (you will not be able to use this computer in airplanes, libraries, classrooms, group work sessions, etc. due to fan speed). The loud fan will prematurely wear out the fan spindle, and uses excessive battery. I am encouraging anyone even considering the purchase of these lines of TOshiba computers to do online research and search these words: Toshiba forum cooling fan constantly. You will see many threads, but the main one has now thousands of views and elucidates the problem well. If you don't wish to look at it now, you will be looking at it intently once you purchase this model of TOshiba. Thus far, there is no fix for this cooling fan software issue.See Here: Toshiba Satellite Laptop
